Summer days are almost here

Sunny days are upon us already.  With longer days, and without proper protection, you could be putting your eyes in harm’s way.  Even when the sun isn’t out, ultraviolet rays can do damage to your eyes.  Here’s a quick summary of the items you’ll need whenever you’re out and about

Protect yourself

What’s hot now

Eyeglasses have become more than instruments that correct vision, they are fashion statements.  That’s because when people see you, they see the eyeglasses that you are wearing.  Eye wear designers have responded with designs that are meant to make you look better, in addition to helping you see better.  Here are a list of trends that are slated for 2010.

Metal frames

Technology has made it possible for frames to get even smaller.  If you have always wanted to wear small round frames, 2010 is the time to try them.  And you can get them in a wide variety of colors.  From matte colors to bright colors and everything in between, you are bound to find a frame that appeals to you.

Lens tints

If you see the world through rose colored glasses, why not equip your eyeglasses to do the same.  You can get your lenses tinted in a variety of colors.  And you don’t have to stop at one color, it’s possible to get highlights and tints all on the same lens.

Frames for your face

A trend that has come back into vogue is the oversized frame.  However, you can now get them with angled edges, for a different twist on the look.  You don’t have to be like everyone else either.  Butterfly frames are now becoming popular, so you can distinguish yourself from all of the other eyeglass wearers.

Coating protects your lenses

Did you ever wonder about the different coating options available to eyeglass wearers?  Well wonder no longer.  They are all more simple than you thought, but were just afraid to ask.  Take a look at the list to learn about the most common coatings.

Anti-reflective coatings

This coating gives the illusion of a flatter surface, so you don’t see bulges as readily.  If the lenses within your eyeglass frame are not quite on the thin side, anti-reflective coatings will make them appear to be so.  And since they have the coating, you should also have a better range of vision because of the glare that is cut out.

Scratch resistant coating

Human nature coupled with an object is bound to be met with some clumsiness.  Scratch resistant coating is a way to protect your investment.  When you accidentally drop your eyeglasses, with scratch resistant coating, you can rest assured that you won’t suffer from hundred of scratches because of your slippery fingers.

Ultraviolet treatments

The harmful effects of the sun are hard to escape.  With ultraviolet treatments, your eyes will be protected from the sun’s glare.  This treatment is quite common because you just can’t escape the sun.

Your eyeglasses are only as good as the lenses they hold within them.  Take care of your eyeglasses and your eyes will be much happier.  Visit glassescrafter.com to see all of the designer possibilities that are waiting for you.

Lenses 101

The eyeglass lens is the most important part of your eyeglasses.  If you are using the wrong prescription, then you would be better off with just clear plastic.  Your eyeglasses are just plain ineffective.  There are different types of lenses available to eyeglass wearers.  Here’s a brief explanation on the most common lenses.

Hi-index Lenses

With hi-index lenses, the weight of your lenses are dramatically changed.  What used to be only available as a thick lens, can be seen through hi-index lenses.  The width of the lens is decreased significantly, so you can wear a thinner frame.  When you order from glassescrafter.com , you get free hi-index 1.61 superthin lenses with every order.

Polycarbonate Lenses

These lenses are also available in thinner weights, so you get the same intensity without the thick lens.  They are also considered to be a high index plastic.  Polycarbonate lenses also offer ultraviolet protection.  Since they are known throughout the industry for being strong, they are usually the lens of choice for sports lenses and safety lenses.

Trivex Lenses

Consider these lenses to be the first cousin to the polycarbonate lenses.  In most aspects they are completely alike.  However, they are more rigid, and not quite as light in weight as polycarbonate lenses.  Usually they are paired with rimless styles.

It’s always good to learn the language of the industry.  The more choices you have, the more empowered you are.  Take a look at the collection at glassescrafter.com .  You’ll find exactly what your looking for, and maybe even more.

Show your eyeglasses love

You take care of your clothes, so naturally, you should show the same care to your eyeglasses.  The better you treat your eyeglasses, the longer they are bound to last.  You don’t treat your favorite pair of designer jeans badly, so why would you treat your designer eyeglasses otherwise.  Here’s a refresher on caring for your eyeglasses.

Put them in their proper place

Eyeglass manufacturers create cases for a reason.  The reason being that if you take care of your eyeglasses, they will last longer.  Don’t just toss your eyeglasses onto your nightstand when you are done for the day.  Put your eyeglasses into the case that came with them, or the one you bought specifically for them.  Either way, just make sure they are safe from scratches and being dropped.

Invest in eyeglass cloths

Regular tissue is not the best way to clean your glasses, contrary to popular wisdom.  Your eyeglasses are very susceptible to being scratched, so it’s best to clean your glasses with a soft cloth.  Many eyeglass vendors carry eyeglass cloths, as well as your neighborhood drug store.  Your eyes will thank you for not having to see through cracks in the lenses.

Your designer eyeglasses, however affordable they are, deserve the same loving care that all of your investments get.  Treat your eyeglasses well, and they will continue to work for you.  Check out the collection that appeals both to your frugal and fashion sensibilities at glassescrafter.com

It’s all in the frame

Eyeglass frames are the first thing people see when you wear eyeglasses.  With all the different types of frames available, you have many different choices.  You don’t have to limit yourself because there simply are no limits.  You can have eyeglasses that range from work only to funky and fabulous,  Here’s a list of the more commonly found frames.

Plastic

The workhorse of all of the frames would have to be plastic.  Plastic frames can be found in just about every color that you could find, and can be designed in limitless styles.  Besides being fashionable, plastic is very durable and is able to hide thicker lenses.  When you are playing sports, plastic is the best route because of its durability.

Metal

When you want a thinner lens, and want to take the focus off of your glasses, metal is the way to go.  Metal frames are generally lighter in weight than plastic frames.  Like plastic, they can be found in a variety of colors also.  Super thin lenses are recommended with metal.

Titanium

The lightest of the metal frames is titanium.  They are known for being able to resist corrosion.  Titanium, like the other metals, would be best suited with the super thin lenses.

You can find all of the frames previously mentioned throughout glassescrafter.com In addition, you can get free standard hi-index 1.61 super thin lenses with any order.

Glasses v. Contacts

In today’s “vision correcting” market, it’s nearly impossible to make up your mind with so many options. The decision used to be “what kind of frames do I get?” or “what color should I pick?” but now there are millions of different glasses and nearly just as many varieties in contacts.

The Pros of Glasses – If you’re not one apt to change, glasses are probably right for you. The traditional approach to correcting your vision can be a great one. There’s no mess in taking them on or off and you can carry them with you anywhere, without hassle. If you’re squeamish about touching your eyes or they become dry frequently, glasses will also be a good friend to you. Wearing glasses has many stigmas associated with it as well. I’m sure you definitely know the stereotype of smarter people wearing glasses but now with so many different designs, any personality can shine through. The selection of unique and fun frames can brighten up your face and accentuate your features or the simple and sophisticated look can give you that brainy feel. Whatever your personality, you can show it off with style and have the advantage of being able to see!

The Cons of Glasses – Glasses may sometimes obscure your vision. For people with naturally horrendous eyesight (like myself), while wearing glasses I have absolutely no peripheral vision. Wearing glasses can be a huge inconvenience when playing sports or engaging in any rambunctious activities. Another problem that I have encountered is that my glasses constantly slide down the bridge of my nose and when it’s raining/snowing/hailing/sleeting they’re useless. Something silly that I have also found with glasses is that drinking that hot cup of coffee in the morning will fog up the lenses so be careful of that!

The Pros of Contacts – If you’re interested in the up and coming and like trying new things, contacts may be quite helpful. If you’re also tired of all the glasses cons I mentioned, maybe it’s time to give contacts a try! Personally, I love contacts. I don’t really ever feel them and it’s just like being able to see well with your own eyes. Since the contact is right on your actually eyeball, it’s much easier to play sports or go out partying and not have to worry about breaking your glasses or losing them. Also, if you like your eyes and don’t want to hide them behind glasses frames, this is a good alternative. They won’t be hanging around your nose and no one will even know you have a vision problem.

The Cons of Contacts – As much as I love these guys, they definitely are not perfect. I mentioned earlier that you don’t have to worry about breaking or losing them in the glasses sense, but contacts can rip or sometimes fall out. They also easily irritate your eyes and if you leave them in too long will turn your eyes a lovely shade of red. Your eyes get dry quickly and you have to solution to clean them or change them out. Depending on if you have bi-weekly or monthly lenses, you also have to remember to dispose of them and put fresh ones in as according to your prescription. Taking care of them can be a hassle as well. You always have to bring an extra pair in the event that something happens to them and a bottle of solution and a case. Your eye care always has to be on your mind when planning to sleep elsewhere. Sometimes lenses can also scratch your cornea, so be careful with overusing them!

These are both the pros and cons of glasses v contacts. I definitely prefer contacts, but hey, what works for me may not work for you! Give both a try and see how you feel. Good luck with your eye care choices and whatever you decide, at least you’ll be able to see clearly!
