Vision problems, decoded
When you go to get your eyes checked, do you wonder about what the technician is talking about. Most people who wear corrective lenses have astigmatism, or are near sighted or far sighted. Here’s a brief explanation on each of the conditions.
Astigmatism
Your cornea, in the front of your eyeball, is supposed to be perfectly round and symmetrical. People who suffer from astigmatism have an asymmetrical cornea, so vision is distorted. People who have astigmatism can also be near sighted or far sighted at the same time.
Myopia
Being near sighted occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is extensively curved. So objects that are nearer are seen easily, but objects that are farther away are blurry. Myopia is more common, and as much as 30% of the population have been reported to be nearsighted.
Hyperopia
People who are far sighted have corneas that aren’t curved sufficiently, or an eyeball that is too short. Things that are far away can be seen clearly, yet things that are closer are blurry. Many people who are far sighted strain to see the objects that are close to them if they are not already wearing eyeglasses.
